Debris et Al (reply)

Interesting, many things in common here: music & instruments, security,
free software, GNU/Linux and the problems surrounding personal and private
information to name a few.

It's great to hear that I'm not totally out of the loop ;)

I found your old hardware list and found that interesting & amusing. I
build clusters out of anything that can still breathe & think for itself.
Ours are named after cats & dogs, so literally a zoo over here.

I got my inspiration from Finnegan (Fin) at clockwatching.org:

http://clockwatching.net/~fin/machines.html

On the other hand, I'm (currently) more into building (or buying) the cheapest computer that runs GNU/Linux (a fully blown desktop distribution) decently. Debris Linux is important: It runs on machines that Ubuntu can't reach and that are even difficult to handle with Debian.

On the music side, I've played the guitar since - well, for a long time -
but I've been attracted more over into the Alain Caron - Tony Levin kind of
experimental bass stuff, been doing that the last 5-6 years, and I'm
finally embarking on the Dreaded Chapman Stick Experiment, as my wife calls
it.

I'm a wind instrument player, mainly saxophonist, but I also play Xaphoon (http://www.xaphoon.com/) and all kinds of recorders and (tin) whistles.

I like Debris a lot as an introduction to the uninitiated; I've dedicated
an old Intel dual-core to it and have already loaded it up with my annual
required number of compilers & interpreters. So, we'll see who likes and
who says what.

That sounds extremely interesting - please keep us posted; I'd prefer discussions about or surrounding Debris Linux to go to the Debris Linux site and forum, though (Renegat3 needs to know everything about success and possible bugs and enhancements).
